Dog Park is a place where I can explore and illuminate the commonplace yet extraordinary expressions and interactions at an urban dog park. We love our dogs and our dogs love us, and we can all gather and tolerate one another for the love of our family members. Using this motley microcosm as a jumping off point for my blog, I am creating a portal through which to tell the stories of a cast of complex characters, with lives steeped in opinion, conflict and resolution. Dog Park episodes will explore impromptu conversation at a dog park, one of America’s last milieu for diverse opinions. Human conversations will be featured as well. My comic illustrations will be hand-drawn, colored and inked using old school illustration techniques, Below is a tile panel of one of my Dog Park characters. For a sneak peak at others, find them under my portfolio of “tiles”. These character panels represent a part of the series of ceramic portraits (of course there will be more dogs and their people). The Dog Park character tiles were created with a classic black majolica glaze technique on handmade earthenware tiles.

Why is it necessary to craft an outside that hides our inside, and how do we negotiate amongst the facades of our loved ones? As an illustrator and storyteller, I have spent my life exploring camouflage, transformation and recognition with paint and language, imagery and words. Ceramics allows me to bring a third dimension to my scrutiny of intimate interiors, and within my Trojan horse Iʼve searched for connection—perhaps reconciliation—between an idealized exterior and the murk and mayhem within.
